How RMIT handles TOEFL scores

RMIT accepts the TOEFL iBT (internet-based test). Any test taken on or after 21 January 2026 must be the TOEFL iBT Australia test, and RMIT does not accept TOEFL iBT results reported on the 1 to 6 score scale. It also does not accept results from at-home or online tests for international students.

Your test must have been completed within two years of your RMIT course start date.

RMIT gives its TOEFL figures on the 0 to 120 scale. Since January 2026 TOEFL iBT score reports also carry a 1 to 6 band score; see the new TOEFL score scale.

For comparison, the same page pairs TOEFL 79 with IELTS Academic 6.5 (no band below 6.0), the level most RMIT degrees ask for.

Your offer and your visa are separate. Home Affairs says that for a TOEFL iBT result to be valid for Australian visa purposes you must select 'Taking TOEFL for Australia' when you register, and it lists TOEFL iBT Home Edition among the online tests it does not accept (Home Affairs English page).

If your TOEFL score is below RMIT's level

The page sets no conditional TOEFL score. It points to RMIT's preferred English language providers for recognised preparatory study, and to recognised qualifications if you have studied in English before.

Requirements vary by programme and change between admissions cycles. The score that binds you is the one on your RMIT programme page and in your offer letter, so check it there before you book a test.
