Test rules and waivers
RMIT does not accept scores from at-home or online testing. Test scores and previous study are recognised for two years from the test or completion date to the programme start date. TOEFL iBT tests taken on or after 21 January 2026 must be the TOEFL iBT Australia test, and results on the 1 to 6 scale are not accepted.
For the MBA, an RMIT bachelor's or postgraduate qualification, or a degree from a recognised English-speaking country, completed within the past five years also meets the requirement. Where you hold more than one form of English evidence, RMIT considers only the most relevant one. Duolingo is not on these pages.

If your score is lower
The undergraduate application page says applicants below IELTS 6.5 (no band under 6.0) may need to take an English for University programme first. For postgraduate study the postgraduate application page points applicants below IELTS 5.5 to the same route. Bachelor's degrees can also be entered from UniSTART Academic or Foundation Studies.
Requirements vary by programme and change between admissions cycles. The score that binds you is the one on your RMIT Vietnam programme page and in your offer letter, so check it there before you book a test.
Minimum vs competitive score
Where RMIT University Vietnam publishes an IELTS score, it is the minimum: the floor an application has to meet to be considered, not a score that guarantees an offer.
Competitive programmes, and courses with far more applicants than places, may expect more than the minimum, and some departments set their own overall or per-skill scores, often for writing or speaking. The course page has the final word, so check it before you book a test.
If you are close to the line, aim for a margin above it: one weak skill can miss the requirement even when the overall band clears it. Not sure where you stand? Take a free IELTS mock test and get a band for each skill.
