What TOEFL score do you need for Sam Houston State University?

The undergraduate requirement applies to international freshmen, international transfers and U.S. transfers with fewer than 30 transferable hours whose school is not on SHSU's list of official English language nations. The page names the Special Home Edition alongside the standard iBT.

For comparison, undergraduate IELTS is 6.0 and the graduate catalog sets IELTS at 6.5.

TOEFL iBT score reports issued since January 2026 also carry a 1 to 6 band score alongside the 0 to 120 total; see our guide to the new TOEFL score scale. Where a page above gives only a 0 to 120 figure, that is the figure this guide reports.

Undergraduates can also meet the requirement by completing an intensive English programme recognised by SHSU or TIEC, or with ACT Verbal 27 or SAT Verbal 600. At graduate level, test waivers are considered for applicants whose previous degree coursework was in English or completed in a country on the official English language nations list, and the Office of Admissions decides once transcripts arrive.

Requirements vary by programme and change between admissions cycles. The score that binds you is the one on your SHSU programme page and in your offer letter, so check it there before you book a test.
