Other ways to reach college level

College-level placement also comes from completing SCIE's College Bridge Level 5, US high school graduation with a GPA of at least 2.0, AP English at 3 or higher, IB English A at 4 or higher (HL), GED Language Arts 145 or higher, or English Composition at an accredited college in a listed country such as Ghana, Kenya, Nigeria, Uganda, the UK or Canada.

Completing both primary and secondary education in a listed country, including Ghana, Kenya, Nigeria, Jamaica and the UK, also counts. One year at a US or English-medium high school without ESL classes, with transcripts showing a B or 3.0 GPA or a top 20% class rank, places you at College Bridge Level 3, as does one year of post-secondary study in a listed country.

Requirements and placement levels change between terms. The score that binds you is the one on Seattle Colleges's international admissions page and in your admission letter, so check it there before you book a test.

Minimum vs competitive score

Where Seattle Colleges (North Seattle, Seattle Central and South Seattle) publishes an IELTS score, it is the minimum: the floor an application has to meet to be considered, not a score that guarantees an offer.

Competitive programmes, and courses with far more applicants than places, may expect more than the minimum, and some departments set their own overall or per-skill scores, often for writing or speaking. The course page has the final word, so check it before you book a test.

If you are close to the line, aim for a margin above it: one weak skill can miss the requirement even when the overall band clears it. Not sure where you stand? Take a free IELTS mock test and get a band for each skill.
