Shoreline placement by IELTS score
From Shoreline's English proficiency page. Scores below these levels are not used for placement. Most students in EAP can also take regular college classes. Scores are valid for two years from the test date.

Superscoring and other accepted measures
Shoreline superscores IELTS: if you have taken it more than once within two years, send all the reports and it uses your highest score in each section. It prefers IELTS scores by e-delivery to Shoreline College. TOEFL MyBest and Home Edition are accepted, and the TOEFL scale changed for tests on or after 21 January 2026, which is why two TOEFL levels are listed.
For English 101 Shoreline also accepts Cambridge B2 First, C1 Advanced or C2 Proficiency at 162 with 169 in writing, SAT Reading and Writing 460, ACT 19 in Reading and English, CEFR B2, IB English A Literature 5 to 7, and Cambridge IGCSE, A or O Level English at A, B or C. A D grade, ELS Level 109 or Cambridge 154 places you in EAP.

If you arrive without a score
If Shoreline does not have your official score report or other proof at admission, it issues an I-20 for ESL. When you finish ESL or prove your English, it issues an associate-level I-20. Students placed in EAP take the English test at international student orientation to fix their level.
Requirements and placement levels change between terms. The score that binds you is the one on Shoreline College's international admissions page and in your admission letter, so check it there before you book a test.
Minimum vs competitive score
Where Shoreline College publishes an IELTS score, it is the minimum: the floor an application has to meet to be considered, not a score that guarantees an offer.
Competitive programmes, and courses with far more applicants than places, may expect more than the minimum, and some departments set their own overall or per-skill scores, often for writing or speaking. The course page has the final word, so check it before you book a test.
If you are close to the line, aim for a margin above it: one weak skill can miss the requirement even when the overall band clears it. Not sure where you stand? Take a free IELTS mock test and get a band for each skill.
