University English requirements

What IELTS score do you need for Singapore Institute of Technology (SIT)?

The Singapore Institute of Technology (SIT) asks international applicants whose language of instruction was not English for IELTS Academic 6.5 or TOEFL iBT 90. The same scores apply to its postgraduate programmes, where the test must be taken within two years of applying. Some degrees set a higher programme-specific level, and applicants below the bar may be invited to sit SIT's own English test.Source: Singapore Institute of Technology official English requirements · checked 29 October 2026

Programme-specific requirements

SIT's undergraduate guide says some programmes have their own English requirements, and applicants must meet whichever is higher, so check the programme page as well. Admission is competitive and assessed holistically on academic results, test scores, experience and a personal statement, with interviews for shortlisted applicants.

PTE and Duolingo are not on SIT's tables. Applicants presenting Indian Standard 12 are recommended to submit SAT or SAT Subject Test scores.

If you miss the score

Both guides say applicants who do not meet the English requirement may be invited to complete an English test conducted by SIT. For postgraduate study, IELTS or TOEFL must have been taken within two years before the date of application. You only need a test if your school or university was not taught in English.

Requirements vary by programme and change between admissions cycles. The score that binds you is the one on your SIT programme page and in your offer letter, so check it there before you book a test.

Minimum vs competitive score

Where Singapore Institute of Technology (SIT) publishes an IELTS score, it is the minimum: the floor an application has to meet to be considered, not a score that guarantees an offer.

Competitive programmes, and courses with far more applicants than places, may expect more than the minimum, and some departments set their own overall or per-skill scores, often for writing or speaking. The course page has the final word, so check it before you book a test.

If you are close to the line, aim for a margin above it: one weak skill can miss the requirement even when the overall band clears it. Not sure where you stand? Take a free IELTS mock test and get a band for each skill.
