Bachelor's: one standardised test, with IELTS as an option
SMU's international qualifications page says applicants with the listed qualifications, India Standard 12 among them, must submit any one standardised test: SAT, ACT, IELTS Academic, TOEFL, C1 Advanced, PTE Academic or AST. No test is needed with an IB Diploma or acceptable diplomas from LASALLE, NAFA or NIE. TOEFL iBT and IELTS Online are both accepted.
SMU calls these scores minimally sufficient for a competitive application, not a guarantee of an interview. All sections must come from one sitting; scores from different sittings cannot be combined.

Validity, timing and Indian applicants
IELTS, TOEFL, C1 Advanced, PTE Academic and AST scores are valid for two years; for the 2026 admissions exercise (AY2026-27, closing date 19 March 2026), scores from tests taken before 19 March 2024 were not considered. SAT and ACT scores last five years. You upload copies through Applicant's Self Service and must also have the testing agency send official scores to SMU.
SMU does not exempt Indian boards from the test: India Standard 12 applicants need one of the listed tests like everyone else. An SAT or ACT can fill that slot instead of an English test.

The LL.M. admission criteria ask IELTS Academic 6.5 overall or TOEFL 90 (4.5 on the new scale) from all international applicants except those from English-medium institutions in Australia, Canada, Hong Kong, Ireland, New Zealand, the Philippines, the UK and the US. India is not on that list. Scores are valid for two years from the test date and must still be valid when the application period opens. TOEFL ITP, TOEFL MyBest, IELTS One Skill Retake and Duolingo are not accepted.
The MSc in Computing asks for TOEFL, or IELTS instead, only if your bachelor's was not taught in English, taken within two years before admission; its page states no minimum score.
SMU's English pages we read do not set a separate English score for the student visa or permit. Requirements vary by programme and change between admissions cycles. The score that binds you is the one on your SMU programme page and in your admission decision, so check it there before you book a test.
