Test rules and IELTS comparison
Stony Brook is test optional, but international students are still expected to submit proof of English proficiency through an official score report. Submit Duolingo, TOEFL, IELTS or one of the other listed exams if you do not meet an exemption.
IELTS comparison: the undergraduate page asks for IELTS 6.5 (4.5 for Intensive English Center conditional admission), and the graduate page asks for IELTS 6.5 with no subsection recommended below 6.

If your score is lower
Students who meet the academic criteria but lack the English level may be considered for the University Preparation Program (UP) at the Intensive English Center, studying English plus one or two academic classes. Passing the highest IEC level with a C or above in each academic course lets you move into full-time studies. The Duolingo 80 route is for English-only study.
Requirements vary by programme and change between admissions cycles. The score that binds you is the one on your Stony Brook programme page and in your offer letter, so check it there before you book a test.
