Do you need IELTS for a Studienkolleg in Germany?

No. A Studienkolleg teaches its courses in German, so the DAAD says you need a good command of German, CEFR B1 to B2, on admission, and you must pass an entrance exam. After two semesters you sit the Feststellungsprüfung. IELTS matters only if you apply to an English-taught international programme, which is exempt from the German language requirements.

Who goes to a Studienkolleg

If your school-leaving certificate is not recognised as a university entrance qualification in Germany, the DAAD says you need to enrol in a Studienkolleg, where courses prepare you for your chosen degree (DAAD requirements). After two semesters, you take the Feststellungsprüfung (assessment test). Passing it qualifies you to apply to programmes that match your Studienkolleg course.

Where IELTS fits

The DAAD says most institutions require German at least at B2 for German-taught study, but international and postgraduate programmes taught in English are exempt and ask for proof of English instead (DAAD requirements). If your goal is an English-taught programme, check whether your school certificate gives direct admission before planning a Studienkolleg year.

Check your certificate first

Whether you need a Studienkolleg depends on how your school-leaving certificate is assessed. The DAAD points to its admission database and its Studienkolleg pages to check whether your certificate is recognised and whether you qualify for subject-related or general admission (DAAD: Studienkollegs).

Universities often keep a quota for students who completed a Studienkolleg in the same state. Requirements change between intakes and scholarship rounds. Confirm the current rule on the DAAD requirements overview before you book a test or apply. This guide is general information, not admissions advice.
