How do you request disability accommodations for the TOEFL iBT?

Apply to ETS Disability Services before you book, because accommodations must be approved before you can schedule the test. The simplest route is your ETS account, under TOEFL Accommodation Status/New Request. ETS says documentation review takes about six weeks, and another six if it needs more documents. Wait for the approval email before you book.

How and when to apply

Log in to your ETS account, choose TOEFL Accommodation Status/New Request on the home page and follow the steps. You can also email, post or courier your request using the instructions in the Bulletin Supplement (ETS).

Apply as early as possible, especially for an alternate test format. ETS's page says documentation review takes about six weeks once your request and paperwork arrive, and another six weeks if extra documents are needed; the bulletin says four to six weeks (ETS, bulletin). Once approved, you get an email explaining how to register.

Health needs: food, equipment and breaks

There are no scheduled breaks in the TOEFL iBT (ETS FAQ). If a health need means you must bring equipment, drinks or snacks into the testing room, or take extra or longer breaks, you must go through the same accommodations process (ETS). At a test centre, food and drink are not allowed in the testing room without an approved health accommodation (ETS test day).

ETS Disability Services can be reached at stassd@ets.org (documents to disability.reg@ets.org) or +1-609-771-7780, Monday to Friday, 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. US Eastern time (ETS). Rules and fees change. Check the test owner's own page before you book or pay. This guide is general information, not official advice from ETS or Duolingo.
