How does TOEFL Home Edition check-in work?

At least 48 hours before, run the equipment check in the TOEFL Test App and verify your ID with the IDVaaS app if asked. On test day you can start check-in up to 15 minutes early and up to 30 minutes late. You then connect a phone or tablet as a second camera, complete the proctor's ID check and scan your room.

Verifying your ID with IDVaaS

Scan the QR code in your email or on My TOEFL Home to download the app, then scan it again in the app. Photograph your ID in good light without glare, scan its chip if it has one (close a passport and touch the top of your phone halfway down it), and take a straight-on selfie with a neutral expression. On test day your identity is matched with this record and confirmed by the proctor (ETS).

If you skip this step you may need to start early, because verification must be done before check-in. If the app cannot read documents from your country, you show acceptable ID to the proctor instead; if verification fails, you may be asked to verify again or send more documents (ETS).

Check-in on the day

Select Start Test from your order confirmation email or My TOEFL Home and the TOEFL Test App opens. You enter a virtual waiting room, connect your second camera, complete a proctor-assisted ID check and scan your room: all walls and corners, under the desk and your whole workspace (ETS). Have a phone or hand-held mirror ready for check-in (bulletin).

You can begin up to 15 minutes before your scheduled time and up to 30 minutes after it. If you have not checked in by then, the test is cancelled and the fee is not refunded (bulletin).

Setting up the second camera

Use a phone or tablet with a working camera, iOS 12 or Android 8 or higher, a full battery, a charger and an internet connection of at least 1 Mbps. Stand it on something sturdy, such as a mug or phone stand; tape, putty, glue, cardboard stands and unstable items are not allowed. Place it sideways, about arm's length away, on the side nearer the wall, so it shows your screen, keyboard, mouse, both hands and the side of your face (ETS).

If it disconnects during check-in you rescan the QR code; during the test the proctor pauses the exam and helps you reconnect (ETS). Room and equipment rules are in our TOEFL Home Edition guide. Rules and fees change. Check the test owner's own page before you book or pay. This guide is general information, not official advice from ETS or Duolingo.
