University English requirements

What IELTS score do you need for Tongji University?

Tongji University in Shanghai asks international master's applicants for an overall IELTS band of 6.0 or TOEFL iBT 80. You can instead send materials proving your degree was taught in English, which many Indian, Pakistani and Nigerian graduates can do. The 2026 guide sets no band minimums, and some schools add their own conditions.Source: Tongji University official English requirements · checked 31 October 2026

Other tests and waivers

The master's guide names only TOEFL iBT and IELTS, plus documents showing your degree's medium of instruction or working language was English. PTE and Duolingo are not listed.

The Master of Global Management FAQ says a test score is required from applicants from non-English-speaking countries, and may be waived for native speakers or applicants whose undergraduate degree was taught entirely in English. Its deadline is usually in early April for September entry.

Dates, age limits and fees

For autumn 2026 entry, Chinese Government Scholarship and self-funded applications ran from 25 October to 20 December 2025, and Shanghai Government Scholarship and self-funded applications from 10 January to 20 March 2026. Scholarship applicants must be 35 or under and self-funded applicants 45 or under. The online application fee is RMB 600, and the software engineering master's lists tuition of RMB 39,000 a year.

Requirements vary by programme and change between admissions cycles. The score that binds you is the one on your Tongji programme page and in your offer, so check it there before you book a test.

Minimum vs competitive score

Where Tongji University publishes an IELTS score, it is the minimum: the floor an application has to meet to be considered, not a score that guarantees an offer.

Competitive programmes, and courses with far more applicants than places, may expect more than the minimum, and some departments set their own overall or per-skill scores, often for writing or speaking. The course page has the final word, so check it before you book a test.

If you are close to the line, aim for a margin above it: one weak skill can miss the requirement even when the overall band clears it. Not sure where you stand? Take a free IELTS mock test and get a band for each skill.
