Degree or school in English

A degree of at least three years taught in English counts without a test, but only if it is from a recognised institution in the EU/EEA, Switzerland, the UK, the USA, Canada, Australia or New Zealand. TU Wien says English-taught degrees from other countries are not accepted, so a bachelor's from India, Pakistan, Nigeria or Bangladesh does not replace the test even if it was taught in English.

A school-leaving certificate with English from a school in the same countries also counts, as does an IB Diploma with grade 5 or above. Nationality alone is not accepted as proof.

German-taught programmes and doctoral study

German-taught master's programmes do not need English B2; they need German at A2 or C1 instead. TU Wien says doctoral programmes generally do not require proof of English.

Requirements vary by programme and change between admissions cycles. The score that binds you is the one on your TU Wien programme page and in your offer, so check it there before you book a test.

Minimum vs competitive score

Where TU Wien (Vienna University of Technology) publishes an IELTS score, it is the minimum: the floor an application has to meet to be considered, not a score that guarantees an offer.

Competitive programmes, and courses with far more applicants than places, may expect more than the minimum, and some departments set their own overall or per-skill scores, often for writing or speaking. The course page has the final word, so check it before you book a test.

If you are close to the line, aim for a margin above it: one weak skill can miss the requirement even when the overall band clears it. Not sure where you stand? Take a free IELTS mock test and get a band for each skill.
