Can previous education replace an IELTS certificate?

Some routes accept other evidence, but an English-medium letter is not automatically enough. WU's Business and Economics bachelor's list includes a passing English grade on a school-leaving certificate from an EU/EEA or Swiss school. Its master's page has different prior-education conditions; use the list for your degree level.

TU Graz and Innsbruck also accept specified prior-education evidence. Check the official source for the required country, course duration and documents; a generic medium-of-instruction letter is not a confirmed exemption.

Match your documents to the institution's exact evidence route. Do not transfer one university's country list, study-duration rule or exception to another. Ask admissions about missing information before relying on an alternative to a test.

Before booking: keep one checklist per application

  • Record the institution, programme, intake, language of instruction and official admissions link.
  • Copy the accepted test version, overall target, any component targets and the deadline for submitting evidence. Mark missing information as 'confirm'.
  • Check certificate age against the university's stated reference date. Ask about One Skill Retake or an online result if you intend to use either and the policy does not say.
  • If relying on prior education, list the required documents and compare the country, duration and language conditions with your own study history.
  • Only then compare the provider's current fee and available dates using the linked Austria booking guides. A test offered in Austria is not automatically accepted by every Austrian programme.

Start free IELTS Academic practice around your target

  • Attempt an Academic Reading passage and a Listening recording. Record which question types you missed and why; a short-set percentage is not an IELTS band score.
  • Study an Academic Task 1 model and plan your own report. For Task 2, write an argument before comparing it with a sample answer.
  • Record a Speaking answer and listen for clarity, complete answers and long pauses. Use a fresh prompt for your next attempt.

Frequently asked questions

What IELTS score do I need to study in Austria?+

Use your programme's policy. The WU and TU Graz examples above have different targets by degree level. They do not establish one Austrian minimum or guarantee admission.

Does Innsbruck explicitly require IELTS Academic on its current language page?+

The B2 list says IELTS overall 6.5 without naming the variant. Confirm the version with admissions before booking. The English and American Studies master's has a separate C1 requirement.

Can I use English-medium education instead of IELTS?+

Possibly, if your documents meet the exact alternative-evidence conditions for your programme. The institutions differ in their accepted countries, study duration and documentation.
