University English requirements

What IELTS score do you need for the University of Salzburg?

Salzburg asks applicants to its English-taught master's programmes for an accredited English certificate, at C1 for the MA European Union Studies. That programme lists IELTS Academic 6.5, TOEFL iBT 95, PTE Academic 76 or Cambridge C1 Advanced at 180. A completed English-taught degree of at least four semesters can replace a certificate.Source: University of Salzburg official English requirements · checked 4 November 2026

Alternatives and general rules

Without a certificate, the EU Studies page lets you provide proof of a full bachelor's or master's of at least four semesters taught in English with university confirmation, or a University of Salzburg language department certificate: Advanced English III with at least "Good", or Advanced English IV with "Passed". It also suggests taking an online test such as Duolingo.

The university's master's admission page says applicants to English-taught master's programmes must submit an accredited language certificate, and that a C1 or higher level on a secondary school certificate also counts. It points to a separate PDF for the accepted-certificates list, so check it for programmes other than EU Studies.

Deadlines and how to check

The EU Studies page says applications were closed when it was read. The next call opens on 1 December 2026 for the 2027/28 study year, and formal admission must be confirmed by the beginning of October. Deadlines differ for EU and non-EU citizens and are published by the Admissions Department.

Requirements vary by programme and change between admissions cycles. The score that binds you is the one on your Salzburg programme page and in your offer, so check it there before you book a test.

Minimum vs competitive score

Where the University of Salzburg publishes an IELTS score, it is the minimum: the floor an application has to meet to be considered, not a score that guarantees an offer.

Competitive programmes, and courses with far more applicants than places, may expect more than the minimum, and some departments set their own overall or per-skill scores, often for writing or speaking. The course page has the final word, so check it before you book a test.

If you are close to the line, aim for a margin above it: one weak skill can miss the requirement even when the overall band clears it. Not sure where you stand? Take a free IELTS mock test and get a band for each skill.
