Proofs that never expire, and who they cover

Some proofs have unlimited validity: a school-leaving exam passed in English in the EU, EEA, Switzerland, the UK, the US, Australia, New Zealand or Canada; an IB Diploma with English; or a full-time degree of at least two years taught entirely in English at a university in one of those same countries. A degree from India, Pakistan, Bangladesh or Nigeria is not on that list, so plan on a test score.

Duolingo is not on Innsbruck's list of accepted English certificates.

Most programmes at Innsbruck are taught in German

Innsbruck's page says all bachelor's and diploma programmes, and most master's and doctoral programmes, are taught in German. Only selected programmes run in English, so confirm the language of instruction before you plan around the IELTS score.

For a German-taught programme you need German at A2 when you apply and B2 at admission, which you can reach through the University Preparation Programme.

Requirements vary by programme and change between admissions cycles. The score that binds you is the one on your Innsbruck programme page and in your offer, so check it there before you book a test.

Minimum vs competitive score

Where the University of Innsbruck publishes an IELTS score, it is the minimum: the floor an application has to meet to be considered, not a score that guarantees an offer.

Competitive programmes, and courses with far more applicants than places, may expect more than the minimum, and some departments set their own overall or per-skill scores, often for writing or speaking. The course page has the final word, so check it before you book a test.

If you are close to the line, aim for a margin above it: one weak skill can miss the requirement even when the overall band clears it. Not sure where you stand? Take a free IELTS mock test and get a band for each skill.
