Validity and how to send your score

Graduate scores are valid for two years from the test date and must be sent electronically from Duolingo to UC San Diego Graduate Admissions. The page gives the steps: log in at englishtest.duolingo.com, open "My Tests", click "Share Score" on your certified result, choose "university", search for UC San Diego and tick the UCSD box.

UC San Diego says it has no preference between the English tests it accepts. Applicants with marginal scores may have to pass an English test on arrival or take an English course until they reach the required level.

IELTS comparison: the same graduate page sets IELTS Academic Band 7, and the UC undergraduate page asks for IELTS 6.5.

If your score is lower

Transfer applicants can skip the test by completing two UC-transferable English composition courses; for San Diego the UC page asks for grades of B or higher in those courses. Neither page lists conditional admission based on a Duolingo score.

Requirements vary by programme and change between admissions cycles. The score that binds you is the one on your UC San Diego programme page and in your offer letter, so check it there before you book a test.
