University English requirements

What PTE score do you need for UC San Diego?

UC San Diego's minimum PTE Academic score for graduate admission is 65 overall, and some programmes set higher minimums. UCSD has no preference among the English tests it accepts. For undergraduate admission, the University of California's English proficiency page lists TOEFL, IELTS and the Duolingo English Test, and does not list PTE Academic.

Test rules and the IELTS comparison

The graduate page gives the PTE minimum but does not say whether PTE Academic Online or PTE Core is accepted, how long PTE scores stay valid, or how to send them; it points to the PTE website for registration. For the Duolingo English Test, by contrast, it states two-year validity and electronic sending.

On the same page, UCSD's university-wide graduate minimums are IELTS Academic band 7 and TOEFL iBT 4.5 on the new scale (85 on the previous scale), so PTE 65 is UCSD's PTE route to its graduate level.

If you fall short, and teaching assistant rules

UCSD says applicants with marginal TOEFL or IELTS scores may have to pass an English test on arrival or take an English course; it does not say the same for PTE. International graduate students whose first language is not English must also be certified in oral English before they can serve as teaching assistants. Applicants may be exempt from the test with a degree, with grades of B or better, from an institution where English is the sole language of instruction.

Requirements vary by programme and change between admissions cycles. The score that binds you is the one on your UC San Diego programme page and in your offer letter, so check it there before you book a test.
