What TOEFL score do you need for UC Santa Barbara?

For undergraduates, TOEFL scores are valid for two years from the exam date and must be available in July before you enrol at UC. The exam must be completed by the December test date before enrolment and sent directly by the testing agency. UC does not accept MyBest TOEFL; only the highest composite from a single sitting counts.

Graduate scores must be dated within two years of the day you submit the online application and show as Official. Send them to institution code 4835; no department code is needed. The Graduate Division does not accept TOEFL ITP Plus or TOEFL Essentials. Students exempt from the test may still have to take the Graduate Entry Level Placement in English or International Teaching Assistant certification.

For comparison, the undergraduate page sets IELTS at 6.5, and the Graduate Division guide asks for an overall IELTS band of 7.

Undergraduates can meet the requirement in other ways listed on the page, including 24 or more on ACT English Language Arts, 31 or more on SAT Writing and Language, a 3 or higher on AP English Language or Literature, or a grade of C or better in a UC-transferable English composition course. The pages list no TOEFL-based conditional admission.
