What IELTS score do you need for UC Santa Barbara?

You must show English proficiency if your native language is not English and your education was in a country where instruction was not in English, or if you have fewer than three years of instruction in English. Options include IELTS 6.5, TOEFL iBT or Home Edition 80 (4.5 for tests from January 2026), Duolingo 115, ACT English Language Arts 24, SAT Writing and Language 31, AP English 3 or higher, IB English A, or a C or better in a UC-transferable English composition course. The digital SAT Reading and Writing score is not approved. See English language proficiency.

TOEFL, IELTS and Duolingo scores are valid for two years from the exam date, must be taken by the December test date before enrolment, and must be available in July before you enrol. UC does not accept IELTS One Skill Retake or TOEFL MyBest: only the highest composite from a single sitting counts.

Applicants whose native language is not English take TOEFL, IELTS or Duolingo. The university minimums are TOEFL iBT 80 (4.0 for tests from 21 January 2026), IELTS Academic or IELTS Indicator 7 overall, and Duolingo 120; departments may require more. Scores must be dated within two years of the day you submit the application, and if you send several sittings of one exam only the most recent is reviewed. You are exempt only with a degree from an accredited institution whose verified sole official language of instruction is English: a US college, or one listed with English as its sole language in the IAU World Higher Education Database. UCSB accepts no other evidence, so letters or transcripts do not help, and many Indian universities that teach in English will not meet this test unless the database lists English alone. Exempt students may still have to take the Graduate Entry Level Placement in English.

The International Undergraduate Pathway Program combines six weeks at UCSB's Summer English Academy with three quarters of general education and academic preparation courses, and guarantees you can seek admission to UCSB after completing Santa Barbara City College (SBCC).
