One test form, and the alternatives UCOL names

UCOL takes IELTS scores from a single Test Report Form only, so you cannot combine bands from two sittings. Its IT pages accept an equivalent score including TOEFL, the business diploma accepts the equivalents in the NZQA rules, and the international application checklist names IELTS, TOEFL and PTE as proof of English. The programme pages do not print PTE or Duolingo scores, so confirm the exact equivalent with UCOL before booking.

The business diploma test must be from the preceding two years. For nursing the test must also be dated within two years of your application, and the New Zealand Certificate in English Language (Level 5 Academic) is accepted instead, in line with Nursing Council of New Zealand guidance.

Campuses and how to apply

The ICT degree and postgraduate diploma are taught at UCOL Manawatū in Palmerston North. Nursing is also taught at UCOL Whanganui and UCOL Wairarapa in Masterton. UCOL's international how to apply page lists the certified documents to prepare: English test results, identification and academic transcripts.

International applicants under 20 also need NCEA equivalency for the ICT degree.

Requirements vary by programme and change between admissions cycles. The score that binds you is the one on your UCOL course page and in your offer, so check it there before you book a test.

Minimum vs competitive score

Where UCOL (Universal College of Learning) publishes an IELTS score, it is the minimum: the floor an application has to meet to be considered, not a score that guarantees an offer.

Competitive programmes, and courses with far more applicants than places, may expect more than the minimum, and some departments set their own overall or per-skill scores, often for writing or speaking. The course page has the final word, so check it before you book a test.

If you are close to the line, aim for a margin above it: one weak skill can miss the requirement even when the overall band clears it. Not sure where you stand? Take a free IELTS mock test and get a band for each skill.
