UIUC's TOEFL rules

Undergraduate scores must come from tests within two years of enrolment. Report your highest overall score and highest subscores regardless of test date, but do not use MyBest. The TOEFL iBT Special Home Edition is accepted for fall 2027 only at this time, and official scores are needed only if you enrol.

Graduate scores must be dated within two years of the start of your admission term and sent by ETS to code 1836. The Graduate College accepts the TOEFL iBT and Home Edition but not TOEFL Essentials or MyBest scores. Teaching assistants need a TOEFL Speaking score of 5.0 (24 for scores before 21 January 2026) or can take the Oral English Assessment Interview.

For comparison, the Graduate College page sets IELTS Academic at 7.5 for full status and 6.5 for limited status.

If your TOEFL score is below UIUC's level

Graduate applicants between the limited and full-status minimums can still be admitted, but must take the English as a Second Language Placement Test before enrolling and are generally placed in non-credit ESL courses with a reduced academic load from the first semester. Individual programmes may require more.

Requirements vary by programme and change between admissions cycles. The score that binds you is the one on your UIUC programme page and in your offer letter, so check it there before you book a test.
