Graduate rules, TAs and the IELTS comparison

The graduate language requirements page says the requirement can be met with TOEFL, IELTS, PTE or, if accepted by the programme, Duolingo. It sets IELTS 6.0 for entry to any programme and 6.5 for consideration for a teaching assistantship, but gives no Duolingo level for teaching assistantships. A medium of instruction letter does not meet the exemption rules.

For undergraduates, the admission page says official scores must be sent directly from the testing agency. You can name UMass Dartmouth when you register, or request scores from Duolingo afterwards.

Compared with IELTS: undergraduates need IELTS 6.0 or Duolingo 105, and most listed graduate programmes pair IELTS 6.5 with Duolingo 110.

If you fall short

Undergraduates who do not meet the English requirement may join the Gateway Program to build the academic language skills needed for full admission, per the undergraduate page. Graduate applicants should check the program-specific page to confirm their programme accepts Duolingo at all before taking it.

Requirements vary by programme and change between admissions cycles. The score that binds you is the one on your UMass Dartmouth programme page and in your offer letter, so check it there before you book a test.
