What IELTS score do you need for Universiti Malaya?

UM's FAQ says IELTS, TOEFL, PTE and MUET results are valid for two years and Cambridge English qualifications indefinitely, and your score must be valid when you submit it.

IELTS One Skill Retake is accepted. IELTS Indicator, TOEFL Home Edition and TOEFL ITP are not, and IELTS UKVI is not accepted either, because UM says it is designed for UK institutions and UK visas. The programme pages also list TOEFL Essentials (Online) scores, from 8.0 to 10.0. Duolingo is not on any UM page we read.

If you have met the other entry requirements but not yet sent your English results, UM may issue a conditional offer with a deadline for your score; missing it may lead to the offer being withdrawn.

UM's FAQ says English exemptions are granted only to postgraduate applicants: those from countries with English as the national language, those with a qualification from an institution that teaches in English, and those who completed higher studies in Malaysia and are moving to the next level. The last two must upload a letter from their previous institution confirming the studies were in English.

UM teaches all programmes in English unless otherwise specified; some programmes at the Academy of Islamic Studies, Academy of Malay Studies, Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences and Faculty of Languages and Linguistics are taught in other languages.

Universiti Malaya's English pages we read do not set a separate English score for the student residence permit or visa. Requirements vary by programme and change between admissions cycles. The score that binds you is the one on your UM programme page and in your admission decision, so check it there before you book a test.
