Exemptions and rules

TOEFL ITP is not accepted, and scores must be no more than five years old. You are exempt if you graduated from an institution recognised by Malaysia's MQA, hold a degree from a native English-speaking country, or are a citizen of a country on UPM's list of native English-speaking or Commonwealth countries, which includes India, Singapore, the UK, the USA, Canada and Australia. A bachelor's in English Language can also count for a master's, with supporting letters.

For undergraduate entry, UPM's English proficiency document gives IELTS 5.5 for most programmes and 6.0 for TESL and English, with TOEFL 500 (550 for TESL and English). An older document gives IELTS 6.0 for direct admission and 5.5 for provisional admission. Neither is dated as current, so confirm with UPM for your programme.

Provisional admission and English courses

Provisional postgraduate students must pass the Tertiary English Programme, which costs RM1,600, or RM2,000 for English-related fields. If you have IELTS 4.0 to 4.5 (or TOEFL PBT 450 to 499, or CEFR B1), UPM's Intensive English Programme runs for 12 weeks from October to January.

Requirements vary by programme and change between admissions cycles. The score that binds you is the one on your UPM programme page and in your offer letter, so check it there before you book a test.

Minimum vs competitive score

Where Universiti Putra Malaysia (UPM) publishes an IELTS score, it is the minimum: the floor an application has to meet to be considered, not a score that guarantees an offer.

Competitive programmes, and courses with far more applicants than places, may expect more than the minimum, and some departments set their own overall or per-skill scores, often for writing or speaking. The course page has the final word, so check it before you book a test.

If you are close to the line, aim for a margin above it: one weak skill can miss the requirement even when the overall band clears it. Not sure where you stand? Take a free IELTS mock test and get a band for each skill.
