University English requirements

What IELTS score do you need for the University of Bremen?

The University of Bremen publishes one table of recognised certificates, and each master's sets B2 or C1. IELTS Academic 6.0 to 6.5 counts as B2 and 7.0 or higher as C1; PTE Academic needs 59 or 76, and TOEFL iBT 72 or 95. Duolingo is recognised only at A2, so it cannot meet a B2 or C1 requirement.

Bremen's recognised English certificates

This table is from Bremen's list of recognised language certificates, valid for all applications for the 2026/27 winter semester. IELTS Academic Online and IELTS One Skill Retake are named alongside the paper and computer test. English courses at language schools or inside a degree do not count unless the certificate is a UNIcert.

Which level your master's needs

Bremen's master's programmes page gives each programme's level. Communication and Information Technology, Control, Microsystems, Microelectronics, Ecology, Digital Media and Society and Biochemistry and Molecular Biology need English C1 for enrolment. Applied Geosciences and Electrochemical Engineering for Sustainability need B2. Artificial Intelligence and Intelligent Systems asks B2 when you apply and C1 for enrolment.

Some programmes, such as Betriebswirtschaftslehre, also need German C1, so check both languages on your programme's entry.

Medium-of-instruction letters and deadlines

Bremen's master's FAQ says English at B2 or C1 can be proven with a school qualification or bachelor's degree taught 100% in English, and that a medium-of-instruction letter from your school or university is enough. It names no country restriction.

For admission-restricted master's, proof is due by the application deadline; for unrestricted ones, two weeks after lectures start. Neither the certificate list nor the FAQ states how old a test result may be.

Your German student visa is handled by the German embassy or consulate where you apply, not by the University of Bremen. This guide covers the University of Bremen's admission rule only. Our IELTS for Germany guide covers the visa side and test fees.

English requirements in Germany are written into each programme's admission or examination regulations and can change between intakes. The score that binds you is the one on your University of Bremen programme page and in your admission letter, so check it there before you book a test.

Minimum vs competitive score

Where the University of Bremen publishes an IELTS score, it is the minimum: the floor an application has to meet to be considered, not a score that guarantees an offer.

Competitive programmes, and courses with far more applicants than places, may expect more than the minimum, and some departments set their own overall or per-skill scores, often for writing or speaking. The course page has the final word, so check it before you book a test.

If you are close to the line, aim for a margin above it: one weak skill can miss the requirement even when the overall band clears it. Not sure where you stand? Take a free IELTS mock test and get a band for each skill.
