How UChicago handles TOEFL scores

The English language requirements page accepts the TOEFL iBT taken at a test centre or online at home. It does not accept the TOEFL ITP Plus, Duolingo, the IELTS Indicator or any other test. Scores are valid for two years and count as expired if the test was taken more than two years before the application deadline. PDFs or photocopies of score reports are not accepted.

TOEFL institution codes are 1832 for the university excluding business programmes, 1832-02 for the Booth MBA and 1819 for the Booth PhD. The page notes that the general policy does not apply to Booth, the Law School, the Pritzker School of Medicine, the Master of Arts in Economics or the Advanced Scholars Program, which publish their own rules.

For comparison, the same required scores page sets IELTS at 7.0 overall for most programmes, usually with 7.0 on each section.

If your TOEFL score is below UChicago's level

The graduate pages do not describe conditional admission or a pathway for a low score. You may be waived if you meet one of the two waiver criteria, such as a full academic year of full-time degree study in a listed English-speaking country; the application system applies the waiver automatically, and the page asks you not to contact departments about it.

Requirements vary by programme and change between admissions cycles. The score that binds you is the one on your UChicago programme page and in your offer letter, so check it there before you book a test.
