Degree taught in English
No test is needed if you completed a bachelor's or higher degree in an English-taught programme in Australia, Canada, Ghana, Ireland, New Zealand, Nigeria, the UK or the US. Degrees from the EU/EEA and a second list of countries, including India, Kenya, the Philippines and Singapore, also count, but the language of instruction must be clearly stated on your documents or in an official statement. Pakistan and Bangladesh are not listed.
Online studies and offshore campuses outside the accepted countries do not count. UEF grants no waivers. Duolingo is not accepted.

Test dates and the 2027 application round
TOEFL, IELTS and PTE certificates are valid for two years and must be in effect during the application period; tests completed from 7 January 2025 onwards are accepted for 2027 entry. The IT programme's application period runs from 7 to 21 January 2027 and its tuition fee for non-EU/EEA students is €10,000 a year.
Requirements vary by programme and change between admissions cycles. The score that binds you is the one on your UEF programme page and in your offer, so check it there before you book a test.
Minimum vs competitive score
Where the University of Eastern Finland publishes an IELTS score, it is the minimum: the floor an application has to meet to be considered, not a score that guarantees an offer.
Competitive programmes, and courses with far more applicants than places, may expect more than the minimum, and some departments set their own overall or per-skill scores, often for writing or speaking. The course page has the final word, so check it before you book a test.

Frequently asked questions
What IELTS does UEF need?+
For programmes such as Information Technology and Public Health, IELTS Academic 6.5 with at least 6.0 in each component. Scores are set per programme.
Do Indian students need IELTS for UEF?+
Not if their degree was taught in English and the documents state it. India is on UEF's accepted list.
Does UEF accept PTE?+
Yes. PTE Academic 68 with at least 61 in Writing for the programmes checked.
Does UEF accept IELTS One Skill Retake?+
Yes. UEF accepts One Skill Retake results and TOEFL MyBest Scores.
