What TOEFL score do you need for the University of Hawaii at Hilo?

A student examinee copy of the score can be faxed to Admissions to speed up processing while the official copy arrives. On arrival, undergraduates not exempted by test scores or transfer credit take UH Hilo's English Language Placement and Writing Placement assessments.

TOEFL iBT score reports issued since January 2026 also carry a 1 to 6 band score alongside the 0 to 120 total; see our guide to the new TOEFL score scale. Where a page above gives only a 0 to 120 figure, that is the figure this guide reports.

For comparison, UH Hilo asks undergraduates for IELTS 5.5 and graduate applicants for 6.0.

Undergraduates who meet the academic requirements but have no score, or a score below 61, may be admitted first into the English Language Institute to prepare for degree study. Three years of full-time English-medium schooling in a listed country removes the need for a score. Graduate applicants with a bachelor's from an English-speaking institution are exempt.

Requirements vary by programme and change between admissions cycles. The score that binds you is the one on your UH Hilo programme page and in your offer letter, so check it there before you book a test.
