| Programme | IELTS | Other tests |
|---|---|---|
| MSc Economics (B2) | Academic 6.0+ | TOEFL iBT 90+, or official confirmation of English as language of instruction |
| MSc Photonics, MSc Quantum Science and Technology (B2) | 6.5 | TOEFL iBT 85, TOEIC 780, CAE or CPE |
| MSc Mathematics (B2) | Accepted (no score given) | TOEFL iBT, or English medium of instruction |
| MA English and American Studies (C1) | 7.0 (Academic or General) | TOEFL iBT 95 |
Exemptions and medium of instruction
The Economics applicant FAQ exempts nationals of Australia, New Zealand, the UK, Ireland, Canada and the US, and says that if your university confirms your bachelor's was taught completely in English, you are also exempt. The Mathematics page accepts the same kind of confirmation.
Quantum Science and Technology says German is not needed. Mathematics asks international applicants without German at A2.2 to study German during the programme.

How to check
Each Jena programme page has its own language requirements and application documents section, so read the one for your master's. The English and American Studies MA unusually accepts IELTS General as well as Academic.
Requirements vary by programme and change between admissions cycles. The score that binds you is the one on your Jena programme page and in your offer, so check it there before you book a test.
Minimum vs competitive score
Where Friedrich Schiller University Jena publishes an IELTS score, it is the minimum: the floor an application has to meet to be considered, not a score that guarantees an offer.
Competitive programmes, and courses with far more applicants than places, may expect more than the minimum, and some departments set their own overall or per-skill scores, often for writing or speaking. The course page has the final word, so check it before you book a test.
If you are close to the line, aim for a margin above it: one weak skill can miss the requirement even when the overall band clears it. Not sure where you stand? Take a free IELTS mock test and get a band for each skill.
