How KU handles TOEFL scores

Undergraduate and graduate scores must be less than two years old. KU says TOEFL scores stay active for two years and old-scale scores are accepted until they expire. Graduate scores go from ETS to institution code 6871 and must be under two years old when Graduate Admissions processes the application.

Graduate Admissions accepts TOEFL iBT taken at a test centre or online at home, but not TOEFL MyBest scores. English requirements for graduate teaching assistants are set by the Kansas Board of Regents and are separate from the admission requirement.

For comparison, the undergraduate page sets IELTS Academic at 6.5 with 6.0 in each part, and the graduate page sets IELTS at 6.5 with no part below 6.0 for full proficiency.

If your TOEFL score is below KU's level

Full English proficiency is not a condition of undergraduate admission at KU. Undergraduates below the minimum take KU's online AEC Proficiency Test; those who pass start full-time degree courses, and those who do not enrol at the Applied English Center. Graduate students admitted below Full Proficiency take AEC testing before enrolling and must reach Full Proficiency through AEC courses to graduate.

Requirements vary by programme and change between admissions cycles. The score that binds you is the one on your KU programme page and in your offer letter, so check it there before you book a test.
