Graduate: two proficiency bands
Official scores must come from the testing agency; self-reported scores are not accepted, and TOEFL MyBest and IELTS One Skill Retake are not accepted. Admission Proficiency students must take Applied English Center (AEC) testing and may need AEC coursework, and must reach Full Proficiency to graduate. Online programs require Full Proficiency for admission.
You are fully proficient with a bachelor's or higher from an accredited US university, or from a foreign university that conducts all instruction in English. Your transcripts confirm the medium of instruction, and a Medium-of-Instruction letter may be required. KU names no countries, so this route is open to Indian graduates whose degree was taught entirely in English. See graduate English requirements.

Take a free scored IELTS mock →Undergraduate: no minimum to be admitted
KU sets no English minimum for undergraduate admission, but you must submit a score or other proof with your application. IELTS 6.5, TOEFL 79 or 4.5, PTE 53, SAT Reading and Writing 590 or ACT English plus Reading 48 let you start full-time degree coursework; otherwise you take KU's AEC test. Duolingo is accepted when testing access is limited, with the AEC test still required. India is not among the exemption regions. See English proficiency.
Student visa and next steps
The US F-1 student visa sets no English test score of its own. What counts is the requirement the University of Kansas sets for admission, which leads to your Form I-20. For the wider picture of studying in the US with each test, see IELTS for the USA and PTE for the USA.
Requirements change between admission cycles. Check the KU graduate English proficiency requirements page again before you book a test, and check your own program page, which can set a higher bar.
