UL's minimum English scores
Scores are from UL's undergraduate international English requirements and its postgraduate English language requirements; both pages list the same core minimums. The postgraduate page also gives the new TOEFL scale and LanguageCert Academic, which the undergraduate page does not list.

Test age, waivers and the visa caveat
UL's EU applicants page says results must normally be issued within two years before your course starts, so for September 2026 entry only results from 1 February 2024 count. A validity period is not stated on UL's international English pages, and a position on IELTS One Skill Retake and IELTS Online is not stated by UL.
On the postgraduate page, you meet the requirement with two or more years of bachelor's study, or a whole degree, PG diploma or master's, taught through English in a country where English is the official language, or after living and working full-time in Ireland for two or more years. English-medium study in a country where English is not the official language does not automatically count.
UL adds that even if it waives its own requirement, a study visa applicant must still give Immigration evidence of English competency.

Offer holders who do not meet the requirement can take pre-sessional English classes at the UL Language Centre on campus. UL also says it may accept tests other than those it lists, and an interview may be required alongside Duolingo for certain programmes.
IELTS for the Irish study visa is a separate check
This guide covers UL's admission requirement. The study visa is a separate check: the Irish Immigration Service sets a visa minimum of IELTS Academic 5.0 (PTE Academic 30) for courses other than second-level, foundation or English language courses, and says your college's own minimum may be different. Meeting the visa minimum does not get you an offer; UL's score is the one to aim for. Country-level detail is in our IELTS for Ireland guide.
Requirements are set per intake and can change. Check the University of Limerick English language page and your course page before you book a test. Read on 4 October 2026.
