Manchester TOEFL test rules

Manchester accepts TOEFL iBT for degree-level study and above but not the TOEFL iBT Special Home Edition. Scores from tests taken before 21 January 2026 must meet the 0 to 120 requirement; the page says scores from after that date will be reviewed case by case using ETS equivalency tables. TOEFL results are valid for two years after the test date and must be valid on the first day of Welcome Week.

TOEFL is not on Manchester's list of tests for courses below degree level, such as separate foundation or pre-sessional English courses, which need a UKVI-approved SELT.

For comparison, the same page lists IELTS from 5.5 to 7.5 and above as typical entry levels, with each course setting its own.

If your TOEFL score is below Manchester's level

The University Centre for Academic English runs pre-sessional courses accredited by BALEAP. A separate pre-sessional course needs a SELT rather than TOEFL.

Requirements vary by programme and change between admissions cycles. The score that binds you is the one on your Manchester programme page and in your offer letter, so check it there before you book a test.
