How UM handles TOEFL scores

The undergraduate table accepts the TOEFL iBT and the At-Home Edition, including MyBest scores, and gives UM's code as 4489. The Graduate School also accepts the Home Edition and lists TOEFL Essentials with a minimum of 9. Neither page states a validity period.

The undergraduate figures are given on the 0 to 120 scale only. TOEFL iBT score reports issued since January 2026 also carry a 1 to 6 band score; see our guide to the new TOEFL score scale.

For comparison, UM asks undergraduates for IELTS Academic 6.0 (5.0 for pathway) and graduate applicants for IELTS 6.5 (6.0 provisional).

If your TOEFL score is below UM's level

Undergraduates scoring from 52 to 69 can be admitted to the pathway programme. Undergraduates can also qualify through the UM English Language Institute (TOEFL ITP 525 or an ELI recommendation) or ELS Level 112. Graduate applicants just below the minimum can be admitted provisionally with 71 (or 4 on the new scale).

Requirements vary by programme and change between admissions cycles. The score that binds you is the one on your UM programme page and in your offer letter, so check it there before you book a test.
