How Pitt handles TOEFL scores
Pitt's TOEFL institutional code is 2927; the Swanson School adds department code 69. Undergraduate admissions and the Swanson School accept the TOEFL iBT and the Home Edition but not MyBest scores or TOEFL Essentials. Pitt undergraduate admissions only accepts TOEFL iBT scores from a single test date.
The Swanson School and the Dietrich School both say scores must not be more than two years old; the Swanson School counts that to the first day of classes. Swanson applicants with missing, expired or below-minimum scores will not be admitted.
For comparison, the undergraduate page calls IELTS 7.0 competitive, the Swanson page sets IELTS at 6.5, and the Dietrich page sets IELTS at 7.0 with 6.5 in each section.

If your TOEFL score is below Pitt's level
Undergraduate applicants with old-scale TOEFL scores of 80 to 89 are most often considered for a regional campus, so Pitt recommends ranking campuses on the application. At the Swanson School, admitted graduate students above the minimum but below 5.0 are recommended ESL courses: for example, a writing score of 4.5 or below points to LING 0009.
Requirements vary by programme and change between admissions cycles. The score that binds you is the one on your Pitt programme page and in your offer letter, so check it there before you book a test.
