Graduate: engineering and arts and sciences
Engineering accepts TOEFL iBT and Home Edition, IELTS and Duolingo, not TOEFL MyBest or Essentials. Scores must still be valid, no more than two years old, on the first day of classes, and missing, expired or below-minimum scores mean no admission. Admits below TOEFL 100, IELTS 7.5 or Duolingo 140 are recommended to take English courses. Departments may set higher scores. See Engineering.
Engineering exempts recent graduates of an accredited US institution or another English-speaking country; Dietrich exempts citizens of countries whose official language is English and graduates of English-medium institutions in such countries. Neither page lists countries or says whether India qualifies. Computing and Information waives the test for degrees from the US or a country whose official language is English. See Dietrich.

Take a free scored IELTS mock →Undergraduate: IELTS 7.0 is competitive
Competitive scores for the Pittsburgh campus are TOEFL 100 (5.0 new scale), IELTS 7.0 with 6.0 subscores and Duolingo 125. TOEFL 90–99 (4.5) with a solid record gets strong consideration, and IELTS 6.5 usually leads to a regional campus. A waiver is possible with SAT Reading and Writing 660 or four years at a US high school; India is not on the exempt-country list. See Pitt Admissions.
Student visa and next steps
The US F-1 student visa sets no English test score of its own. What counts is the requirement the University of Pittsburgh sets for admission, which leads to your Form I-20. For the wider picture of studying in the US with each test, see IELTS for the USA and PTE for the USA.
Requirements change between admission cycles. Check the Pitt Swanson School of Engineering English proficiency page again before you book a test, and check your own program page, which can set a higher bar.
