What IELTS score do you need for the University of Surrey?

From Surrey's English language requirements page. PTE Academic, IELTS (including IELTS Online), TOEFL and Duolingo must be from the past two years. Surrey does not accept PTE Academic Online or the online LanguageCert test. Degree-level students do not need a Secure English Language Test, as Surrey assesses English itself as a Student visa sponsor.

Surrey accepts 70% in Standard XII English from CBSE or ISC and 80% from most state boards, for programmes needing up to IELTS 6.5 (6.0), taken within five years. Its India page excludes the Haryana, Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, Uttarakhand, Gujarat and Punjab boards, and says Surrey typically does not require IELTS from Indian undergraduate and taught master's applicants, while reserving the right to ask for one.

Surrey accepts WASSCE English at C6. Its Nigeria page also says WASSCE from Nigeria is not accepted for direct undergraduate entry, which refers to academic entry rather than English. A bachelor's degree taught and assessed fully in English, shown by a medium of instruction letter, can also be accepted where Surrey considers it sufficient. School-English routes for Pakistan, Nepal and Bangladesh are not stated by Surrey.

Surrey's pre-sessional courses run 11 or 8 weeks, on campus or online; the undergraduate route is online only. The 11-week course takes students up to 1.0 band below their degree requirement, and the 8-week up to 0.5 below. The 8-week online course from 19 October 2026 costs £3,200. On-campus students who need a CAS must show UKVI IELTS or UKVI PTE Academic.

Surrey's CAS page says postgraduates must firmly accept by paying any required deposit, and that you may be asked to complete a Pre-CAS interview.

For a Student visa, UK Visas and Immigration asks for English at CEFR B2 for degree-level study and B1 below degree level, per gov.uk. At degree level, gov.uk adds, your university can assess your English itself and may ask you to take a different test.

Requirements vary by programme and change between admissions cycles. The score that binds you is the one on your Surrey programme page and in your offer letter, so check it there before you book a test.
