Sydney TOEFL iBT levels from the concordance table

Sydney does not print TOEFL scores course by course. Its English language requirements page gives each requirement as an IELTS score and sends you to the English language concordance table (July 2026) to convert it. The rows below are the table's TOEFL equivalents for the IELTS levels Sydney courses commonly use.

Which TOEFL versions Sydney accepts

The accepted-tests list says only the TOEFL Australia version of the TOEFL iBT is accepted, reported on a 0 to 120 scale, and that the TOEFL Home Edition is not accepted. All English tests must be no more than two years old at the date your course begins.

The concordance table notes that professional accreditation and registration rules can set a higher level for some degrees, and where they do, the higher requirement applies. Some pre-registration nursing degrees carry extra English requirements, so check the course page.

TOEFL iBT score reports from January 2026 also carry a 1 to 6 band score; our guide to the new TOEFL score scale explains how the two scales appear on a report.

For comparison, the same page gives the standard as IELTS 6.5 overall with no band below 6.0.

If your TOEFL score falls short

Sydney says you can also meet the requirement by completing a relevant English course at the University's Centre for English Teaching, or through qualifying secondary or tertiary study in English. Postgraduate applicants who have lived and worked in a listed English-speaking country for at least five years may be assessed on work experience.

Requirements vary by programme and change between admissions cycles. The score that binds you is the one on your Sydney programme page and in your offer letter, so check it there before you book a test.
