UW's TOEFL rules

First-year applicants must test on or before 31 December of the application year and have ETS send official scores, with subscores, to code 4854. The TOEFL iBT Special Home Edition is accepted, MyBest is not, and scores are valid for two years from the original test date; scores that expire before classes start still count if they reach UW before they expire.

The Graduate School accepts the TOEFL iBT at a test centre or at home, but not MyBest scores. Scores are valid for two years and must be valid on the date you submit your application.

For comparison, the first-year page sets IELTS at 6.0, and the Graduate School policy sets IELTS at 6.5 minimum and 7.0 recommended.

If your TOEFL score is below UW's level

Graduate applicants admitted between the minimum and recommended scores must complete one or two UW Academic English Program courses, starting in their first quarter, at extra cost. Students required to take ENGL 103 and ENGL 104 can instead complete the Graduate School Preparation Program the summer before they start. First-year applicants may be able to use SAT or ACT scores instead.

Requirements vary by programme and change between admissions cycles. The score that binds you is the one on your UW programme page and in your offer letter, so check it there before you book a test.
