University English requirements

What IELTS score do you need for USIU-Africa?

USIU-Africa in Kenya asks for a minimum IELTS score of 6, which it calls competent user, when an international student's studies were not in English. Undergraduates can instead use TOEFL iBT 79, Cambridge Test of English Proficiency at grade C or better, or USIU-Africa's own English Proficiency test at grade C or better. Students from countries where English is the official language are exempt.Source: USIU-Africa official English requirements · checked 5 November 2026

Who is exempt

The page asks for evidence from international students whose studies were not in English. All students for whom English is not a first language must show proficiency before beginning a programme.

Students from countries where English is the official language are exempt, unless their academic performance at USIU-Africa shows they need further English study. The university keeps the final decision on your English level in all cases. TOEFL scores must be current within the last two years.

Pupil's Pass, transfers and how to check

The page says some postgraduate programmes have additional requirements, so read the course page or brochure. The international applicants page repeats that international applicants are considered on the same basis as local applicants but must also show English proficiency.

Non-Kenyan applicants must apply for a Kenyan Pupil's Pass, with evidence of financial support for at least one academic year, current within one year of your start date. Undergraduate transfer students can bring at most 49% of credit, and 51% of units must be completed at USIU-Africa.

Requirements vary by programme and change between admissions cycles. The score that binds you is the one on your USIU-Africa programme page and in your offer, so check it there before you book a test.

Minimum vs competitive score

Where USIU-Africa publishes an IELTS score, it is the minimum: the floor an application has to meet to be considered, not a score that guarantees an offer.

Competitive programmes, and courses with far more applicants than places, may expect more than the minimum, and some departments set their own overall or per-skill scores, often for writing or speaking. The course page has the final word, so check it before you book a test.

If you are close to the line, aim for a margin above it: one weak skill can miss the requirement even when the overall band clears it. Not sure where you stand? Take a free IELTS mock test and get a band for each skill.
