How UT Arlington handles TOEFL scores

Scores must be sent directly to UTA by ETS; student copies are not used for admission. The graduate catalogue describes the 120-scale section scores as preferred, and notes that departments may give preference to applicants who exceed the minimums.

To hold a teaching assistantship, a non-native speaker needs an official TOEFL Speaking score of at least 23 (or IELTS Speaking 7), or must pass the English Language Institute's interview assessment or its course for international teaching assistants. Duolingo cannot be used for this.

For comparison, the international graduate page and the freshmen page both set IELTS at 6.5.

If your TOEFL score is below UT Arlington's level

The pages do not describe conditional admission for a low TOEFL score. Graduate applicants with a US bachelor's, master's or doctoral degree, or from listed English-speaking countries, are exempt; other waivers need a recommendation from the graduate advisor and approval from the dean.

Requirements vary by programme and change between admissions cycles. The score that binds you is the one on your UTA programme page and in your offer letter, so check it there before you book a test.
