Undergraduate: 6.5 IELTS unless you are exempt
International applicants must submit an official TOEFL, IELTS or DET score. UT Austin cannot accept TOEFL ITP, TOEFL Essentials or IELTS General Training. You are exempt if you are from a qualifying country, or graduate from a high school in the US or a qualifying country after at least three years of study.
Qualifying countries are those where English is the sole official language and the primary conversational language; the list includes Australia, Canada (except Quebec), Ghana, India, Ireland, Kenya, New Zealand, Nigeria, Singapore and the UK. TOEFL scores go to code 6882 and IELTS by electronic delivery. Validity and home editions are not stated by UT Austin. See UT Admissions.

Take a free scored IELTS mock →Graduate School: same minimums, stricter waivers
The Graduate School's minimums match the undergraduate ones, but they "may vary depending upon your major" and teaching assistant employment, so check your program. TOEFL ITP and IELTS General Training are not accepted, and self-reported scores are not accepted: the testing agency must send them.
You are exempt if you are from a qualifying country (the same list, including India) or hold a bachelor's degree from an institution in the US or a qualifying country. A master's degree alone from such an institution does not waive the requirement. See the Graduate School page.
Student visa and next steps
The US F-1 student visa sets no English test score of its own. What counts is the requirement UT Austin sets for admission, which leads to your Form I-20. For the wider picture of studying in the US with each test, see IELTS for the USA and PTE for the USA.
Requirements change between admission cycles. Check the UT Austin Graduate School page again before you book a test, and check your own program page, which can set a higher bar.
