UW-Green Bay English requirements by level
From UW-Green Bay's international undergraduate application page and the Office of Graduate Studies international students page. Both give overall IELTS scores only.
| Programme | IELTS Academic | Other tests |
|---|---|---|
| Undergraduate | 6.0 | TOEFL iBT 71 (4.0 from 21 Jan 2026), Duolingo 95, MET 53, SAT ERW 480, ACT English + Reading 34 |
| Graduate | 6.5 | TOEFL iBT 79 (4.5 from 21 Jan 2026), Duolingo 110 |
Exemptions
Citizens of a listed group of countries are exempt at both levels. The list includes Nigeria, Ghana, Kenya, Uganda, Zambia, Zimbabwe, Sierra Leone, South Africa, Singapore, the UK, Ireland, Australia and Canada (except Quebec). India, Pakistan and Bangladesh are not on it.
Undergraduates are also exempt with a post-secondary degree from the US or a listed country, and transfers from US colleges can be waived after 15 or more transferable credits with a 2.5 GPA. Graduate applicants are exempt with a US degree from the past five years. Four years at a US high school does not exempt you; you still need a test or an ACT or SAT score. PTE is not listed.

Conditional graduate admission
Graduate applicants who meet every requirement except English may be recommended for conditional admission. You apply to UW-Green Bay and at the same time to a partner ESL programme (Fox Valley Technical College ESL Institute, or WESLI at the 700 level with a B or better), which issues the first I-20. IELTS scores for graduate applicants starting in fall 2026 can be emailed unofficially to gradstu@uwgb.edu for verification.
Requirements vary by programme and change between admission cycles. The score that binds you is the one on your UW-Green Bay programme page and in your admission letter, so check it there before you book a test.
Minimum vs competitive score
Where the University of Wisconsin-Green Bay (UW-Green Bay) publishes an IELTS score, it is the minimum: the floor an application has to meet to be considered, not a score that guarantees an offer.
Competitive programmes, and courses with far more applicants than places, may expect more than the minimum, and some departments set their own overall or per-skill scores, often for writing or speaking. The course page has the final word, so check it before you book a test.
If you are close to the line, aim for a margin above it: one weak skill can miss the requirement even when the overall band clears it. Not sure where you stand? Take a free IELTS mock test and get a band for each skill.
