Graduate: regular admission at 6.5, dual admission at 6.0

Regular admission carries no enrolment restrictions. Dual admission lets you take six credits of academic coursework while you study English for Academic Purposes (EAP), and you must show full proficiency within three semesters, either with a TOEFL or IELTS score at the full-admission level or by reaching CEFR C1 through EAP 420 or EAP 435 and a writing or speaking test. TOEFL scores go to school code 1473; IELTS and Duolingo reports are uploaded to the application portal. See the graduate English page.

You can skip the test with a bachelor's or higher from an institution where English is the sole language of instruction, if you attended for at least a year and earned the degree within two years of applying to UWM (or earned it in the US and have lived and worked there continuously since). UWM names no countries, so an Indian or Pakistani degree is judged by its language of instruction and dates. See the application requirements.

Undergraduate: IELTS 6.0, or 5.5 with foundation

Bachelor's applicants with full admission take an English placement test and must complete English 102 to graduate. Full admission foundation, at IELTS 5.5, TOEFL 69 to 73 (3.5 new scale), Duolingo 95 to 100 or PTE 36 to 45, adds up to two semesters of EAP coursework alongside degree courses. TOEFL PBT 536 is also accepted. See the bachelor's English page.

Student visa and next steps

The US F-1 student visa sets no English test score of its own. What counts is the requirement UW-Milwaukee sets for admission, which leads to your Form I-20. For the wider picture of studying in the US with each test, see IELTS for the USA and PTE for the USA.

Requirements change between admission cycles. Check the UWM graduate English proficiency page again before you book a test, and check your own program page, which can set a higher bar.
