International students whose bachelor's (or master's) was not taught in English must submit proof of proficiency. The bulletin sets IELTS at 6.5 overall with no less than 6.5 in each of the four sections, and some programs ask for more and say so in their application requirements. TOEFL and IELTS scores may not be more than two years old, and the Graduate School TOEFL code is 1448. WESLI level 700, ELS level 112 with a 3.0 GPA, or UW-Milwaukee ELA level B2 also satisfy the requirement. See the English proficiency page and bulletin.
Citizens of countries where the language of instruction is English may be waived; Marquette's list includes the UK, Ireland, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, Singapore, Kenya and Nigeria but not India or Pakistan. If your degree was taught in English in an unlisted country, ask the Graduate School before relying on it.

Undergraduate applicants submit one of: TOEFL 86 with 20 in each section (tests before 21 January 2026) or 4.5 (from that date), IELTS 6.5 in Reading, Listening, Speaking and Writing, Duolingo 120 with a preferred subscore of 115, SAT Evidence-Based Reading 560, ACT English 24 and Reading 20, or in-person study in the US or Canada (two university semesters or four high school semesters). See application materials.
Applicants who meet every requirement except English can request conditional admission, which becomes full admission when qualifying English evidence arrives. The English study cannot be done at Marquette: you apply directly to an English program, which issues its own I-20. See conditional admission.
Student visa and next steps
The US F-1 student visa sets no English test score of its own. What counts is the requirement Marquette sets for admission, which leads to your Form I-20. For the wider picture of studying in the US with each test, see IELTS for the USA and PTE for the USA.
Requirements change between admission cycles. Check the Marquette Graduate School English proficiency page again before you book a test, and check your own program page, which can set a higher bar.
