How UW-Madison handles TOEFL scores

Both offices use TOEFL code 1846, and scores must arrive electronically from ETS. Undergraduate admissions does not superscore, does not accept MyBest scores, does not accept TOEFL ITP Plus for China and does accept the iBT Special Home Edition. Its score reports cannot be older than two years when you apply.

The Graduate School does not accept scores compiled from multiple tests. Graduate scores are valid if they are less than two years old on the first day of the term you plan to enrol.

For comparison, the undergraduate page sets IELTS at 6.5, and the Graduate School page sets IELTS at 7.0.

If your TOEFL score is below UW-Madison's level

For graduate programmes held in person, the ESLAT range above can lead to admission under certain circumstances and with programme approval. You take the English assessment test on arrival and must pass any recommended ESL course in your first semester. The undergraduate page lists no conditional route, though a waiver can be requested in some cases through the ELP Waiver Request form.

Requirements vary by programme and change between admissions cycles. The score that binds you is the one on your UW-Madison programme page and in your offer letter, so check it there before you book a test.
