How Michigan State handles TOEFL scores

Undergraduate admissions accepts TOEFL iBT Home Edition scores but not TOEFL MyBest superscores. You can self-report on the application, but official scores must arrive from ETS, using code 1465, before you enrol, and later score updates must come from the testing agency.

The Graduate School uses the same code, 1465, and asks for scores sent directly by the testing agency. Many graduate programmes set minimums above the university standard.

For comparison, the undergraduate page sets IELTS at 6.5 (6.0 provisional), and the graduate page sets IELTS at 6.5 with no sub-score below 6.0.

If your TOEFL score is below Michigan State's level

Provisionally admitted graduate students take the MSU English Language Test on arrival. The result decides whether you take full-time academic courses, full-time English Language Center courses or a mix. You must correct the English deficiency within one calendar year. If you reach the regular level on a test before enrolling, your status is updated to regular.

Requirements vary by programme and change between admissions cycles. The score that binds you is the one on your Michigan State programme page and in your offer letter, so check it there before you book a test.
