What TOEFL score do you need for Virginia Tech?

Undergraduate admissions accepts the TOEFL iBT Special Home Edition but does not accept MyBest combined scores, the TOEFL Essentials test or TOEFL ITP Plus. Scores must come from a test taken within the past two years. You can self-report for review, but if you are admitted and accept, official reports must come directly from ETS.

Both offices use code 5859. The Graduate School says no department code is needed and to allow four weeks for scores to arrive. A conferred bachelor's degree from an accredited university taught in English can also meet the graduate requirement.

The transfer figure is given only on the 0 to 120 scale; new reports also carry a 1 to 6 score, explained in our TOEFL 2026 score scale guide.

For comparison, the undergraduate page sets IELTS at 6.5 with no sub-score below 6.5, and the graduate page sets IELTS at 6.5.

Graduate applicants who meet every other requirement but not the English one can apply to the Virginia Tech Language and Culture Institute's AdvantageVT-Master's Program, which lets students in select departments earn credit towards a master's degree while building their English. The undergraduate page lists no conditional route.

Requirements vary by programme and change between admissions cycles. The score that binds you is the one on your Virginia Tech programme page and in your offer letter, so check it there before you book a test.
