Validity, deadlines and the IELTS comparison

OISS says official scores must come directly from the test agency and be less than two years old at the time of the application deadline or submission. Federal rules mean OISS needs evidence of proficiency before issuing an immigration document. For undergraduates, tests taken in December 2026 are the last accepted for fall 2027 entry (October for Early Action or Early Decision I).

From fall 2027 entry, SAT or ACT scores no longer replace an English test for undergraduates. None of the pages sets Duolingo subscores.

On the same OISS page, the IELTS Academic minimum is 6.5 next to the DET 125; undergraduate admissions lists IELTS 7.0 alongside the competitive DET 130.

Exemptions and alternatives

Undergraduates with three or more years in an English-medium programme or US high school and strong results may be exempted, decided case by case. Olin says applicants who believe they qualify for a waiver should not submit a score, though the committee may still ask for one. WashU encourages, but does not require, a third-party interview such as InitialView. The pages describe no conditional admission route.

Requirements vary by programme and change between admissions cycles. The score that binds you is the one on your WashU programme page and in your offer letter, so check it there before you book a test.
